Intraocular lens implants (IOLs) have been used in cataract surgery for many years. These implants are designed to replace your eye’s natural lens that has become clouded by cataracts and restore clearer vision. Even after surgery, eyeglasses may be necessary for vision correction at distance, intermediate, and/or near ranges, depending on the lens option you choose. Standard monofocal lenses are usually covered by insurance after deductibles and co-pays have been met. Premium lens options, however, usually incur additional out-of-pocket costs.
What cataract lens options are available?
Since everyone is different, there are a variety of replacement IOLs with different features to accommodate your personal goals and lifestyle. Your eye care professional will discuss with you which type of IOL might work best for you so you can make the best decision.
At Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor & Haun, we offer the following IOL options:
- Standard Monofocal IOL – A highly effective lens designed to provide the best possible vision at one distance, but typically not near vision. Eyeglasses are often needed to correct vision at mid and/or near ranges following surgery. Standard monofocal IOLs are usually covered by many insurance plans.
- Multifocal IOL – This premium lens is designed to improve distance, intermediate, and near vision as well as treat astigmatism. The multifocal IOL may reduce the need for glasses or contacts after surgery for some patients. This replacement lens is considered elective or premium and will typically require some out-of-pocket costs for the portion of the surgery (the lens upgrade) that would not b covered by insurance or Medicare.
- Toric IOL – The toric lens is designed to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery. It can significantly reduce astigmatism and may reduce the need for corrective lenses for distance vision improvement. Many patients may still need glasses for near vision, however. This replacement lens is considered elective or premium and will typically require some out-of-pocket costs for the portion of the surgery (the lens upgrade) that would not b covered by insurance or Medicare.
