Knoxville Crystalens® Surgeons Named Inaugural Members of Bauch + Lomb Millennium Society

July 26, 2010 – Knoxville, TN Philip D. Campbell, M.D.; Leslie B. Cunningham, M.D.; C. Tobin Taylor, M.D.; and A. Kirk Haun, M.D. of Campbell, Cunningham & Taylor, P.C., with clinics  in Knoxville, Maryville, Sevierville, Farragut, and La Follette, have been named charter members of Bausch + Lomb’s new Millennium Society. Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor, and Haun are four of twelve U.S. Crystalens surgeons who were honored at the recent national meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery held in Boston. Crystalens is the only FDA approved accommodating intraocular lens (IOL).

“We are very pleased to honor the doctors of Campbell, Cunningham & Taylor, P.C., as charter members of the Millennium Society. They have each performed over one thousand Crystalens surgeries and have been national leaders in giving baby boomer and senior patients an opportunity to not only see, but to see better,” said Amy Jacobs, global marketing director for Crystalens.

The choices in vision correction have grown significantly over the past twenty years. The development of the Crystalens gives many baby boomers and seniors an opportunity to see clearly at all distances and reduce their dependency on glasses. The Crystalens is the only intraocular lens that uses the natural focusing ability of the eye by using the eye muscle to flex and accommodate in order to focus on objects whether they are near, far or in between.

“I’m honored that Bausch + Lomb has honored us among the first members of the Millennium Society. We’ve embraced the Crystalens as a very important option for patients because, after having the Crystalens implanted they rarely, if ever, need glasses or contacts again,” said Dr. Taylor.

Campbell, Cunningham & Taylor, P.C., offers a number of vision correction options for patients. It is important that each patient is fully informed about what to expect before, during, and after a surgical procedure.

If a patient has healthy eyes, has not had previous cataract surgery, and does not suffer from major health problems, then he or she is likely to be a good candidate for Crystalens.

There are three million cataract surgeries performed every year in the U.S. A cataract is a clouding of the normal clear lens in the eye. When a cataract forms, the natural lens in the eye is replaced by an intraocular lens. Research indicates that only a small fraction of people realize that not all intraocular lenses are the same. The research also indicates that a number of patients are willing to pay a little extra money in order to get the best quality vision.

Campbell Cunningham & Taylor of Knoxville Help Change 100 Lives in 100 Minutes

April 9, 2008 – KNOXVILLE, TENN. – During just 100 minutes April 9, Campbell, Cunningham & Taylor will be one of 100 surgeons nationwide who will change the lives of 100 low-income people whose failing eyesight will go from murky to new-found clarity at all distances with Crystalens® cataract-lens implants … free of charge.
The program – Changing 100 Lives in 100 Minutes – not only can improve patients’ eyesight dramatically, but many patients may never need eyeglasses again.

Bausch & Lomb, which manufactures the innovative crystalens intraocular lens for cataracts, will donate 100 pairs of these lenses – not generally covered by private insurance or Medicare. Then, from coast to coast, 100 participating ophthalmologists — including Dr. Philip D. Campbell, Dr. Leslie B. Cunningham, Dr. C. Tobin Taylor and Dr. A. Kirk Haun — will perform Crystalens implantation surgeries simultaneously during the next hour and 40 minutes … at no additional charge.

This national effort will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. Eastern daylight time with the implantation of the 100,000th Crystalens.

Crystalens is the only intraocular lens that uses eye muscles to focus in much the same way as the eye’s natural lens, and is designed to provide clear vision at all distances…near, intermediate and far. The Crystalens design is based on the human eye and uses the eye muscle to focus on objects at all distances. It is the only lens to use the eye’s natural focusing ability and is the first and only such lens to be approved by the FDA. Few Crystalens patients have experienced problems with night vision, halos or glare.
