Your eyes are as unique as your fingerprints. Every person’s visual system contains small irregularities which, if treated in a customized fashion, usually results in better quality vision, especially contrast sensitivity and detail. Custom LASIK (also known as CustomVue™) utilizes modern computer technology to capture an image of the entire optical system of your eye. The resulting image and treatment data is then fed into the Star Visx S4 laser which performs a customized treatment designed specifically to correct your exact visual error.

What is Blade-Free LASIK?

Intralase™ uses tiny, rapid pulses of laser light to create the corneal flap during the first step of LASIK. Each pulse of light passes through the top layers of the cornea and forms a microscopic bubble at a specific depth and position within your eye that is determined by your surgeon. Blade-free LASIK allows some patients who were previously ineligible for laser eye surgery to have the procedure. A thin cornea may disqualify some persons interested in LASIK, however with blade-free technology, a thinner flap is possible, thus allowing many persons with thin corneas to now have laser vision correction. Also, a flap that is individualized to each patient can result in better postoperative outcomes. More patients in clinical trials achieved 20/20 or better vision when their procedure was performed using Intralase. Patients also report better quality vision overall, particularly in terms of their ability to see well in low light, such as at dusk or at night.

How do I get started?

Once you’ve determined your interest in LASIK, the first step is to have a consultation with a refractive surgery Patient Coordinator with The Campbell Cunningham Laser Center to determine if you are LASIK candidate. You will have the opportunity to learn more about LASIK as well as other treatment options. Next, you will schedule a preoperative exam which includes a visit with one of our surgeons to discuss your individual needs and expectations for the procedure. The LASIK procedure usually takes just a few minutes and recovery is usually quick. Most patients resume normal activities within 24 hours.

Is Custom LASIK right for everyone?

Although FDA recognizes LASIK as proven, safe and effective, it is an elective procedure with alternatives including eyeglasses, Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), conventional LASIK, and other refractive surgeries. Only an eye care professional trained in laser vision correction can determine whether you are a suitable candidate. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with the treatment. Before deciding whether to have the procedure, it is important to discuss the risks, any questions you may have, and your expectations with your doctor.
